US monoethylene glycol fell 1 cent on the week to an assessment at 41 cents/lb FOB USG tracking a decline in Asian MEG prices, sources said. Demand in MEG remained healthy and was expected to remain that way through the summer due to strong demand in downstream polyethylene terephthalate, sources said. Due to the demand in PET, many in the market continued to have bullish expectations for US MEG throughout the second quarter and into the third quarter. The summer months bring an increase in demand for PET in the form of plastic soda and water bottles. PET and MEG market sources have pointed to projections of a warm summer and greater consumer spending power due to lower gasoline costs as indicators. With the bullishness in the market and expectations of healthy demand to continue, MEG will likely tighten in coming week, sources said, adding that sellers were out of product for export in May.
