Asian acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene fell $35/mt week on week to be assessed at $1,590/mt CFR China and $1,590/mt CFR Southeast Asia Wednesday, shrugging off a surge in the price of main feedstock styrene monomer. The CFR China SM marker surged $85/mt over the same period to be assessed at $1,373.50/mt on firmer benzene, a bullish domestic SM market in China and active short-covering by traders. The increase in costs failed to hold up ABS prices as demand from the manufacturing sector was weak. “In the polymer market, ABS and PS [polystyrene] markets are bad. That is why major Taiwanese producers reduced their offer levels when the SM price is increasing,” a market source based in Taiwan said.
