Asian high density polyethylene film prices slipped $25/mt week on week to $1,355/mt CFR FE Asia Wednesday. Prices of HDPE yarn, injection and blow molding slipped $30/mt week on week to $1,360/mt CFR FE Asia. A fall in domestic PE prices in China and weaker ethylene prices dampened sentiment. Chinese domestic prices fell Yuan 100/mt to Yuan 10,500/mt, or around $1,340-$1,355/mt on an importparity basis. International offers have stayed firm, amid tight supply, but converters remain cautious given narrowing margins. “Downstream demand is weak, and there’s growing risk aversion amongst converters to building stocks, given the fall in ethylene prices,” said a trader. In Southeast Asia, prices of HDPE film also slipped $25/mt week on week to $1,375/mt CFR while prices of HDPE yarn, injection and blow molding slipped $20-$30/mt to $1,380/ mt CFR. The approaching seasonal slowdown in June also contributed to the bearishness. “Converters are reluctant to commit to volumes, monitoring downstream demand closely so that they are not overstocked,” said a buyer.
