GPPS: Asian general purpose polystyrene fell $30/mt week on week to be assessed at $1,410/mt CFR China and $1,420/ mt CFR Southeast Asia Wednesday as major producers lowered offers amid thin demand. Feedstock styrene monomer rose $85/mt over the same period to be assessed at $1,373.50/mt CFR China, supported by firmer upstream crude and benzene, a bullish domestic SM market in China and active short-covering by traders. “It seems that the demand [for PS] is bad and no one believed that SM could increase [so much],” a market source said. HIPS: Highimpact polystyrene fell $10/mt week on week to be assessed at $1,510/mt CFR China and $1,510/mt CFR Southeast Asia amid weakening demand. “Due to a surge in SM prices, we have adjusted our HIPS offers upward. But actual [deals] done is not much,” a trader said. Another source said: “Demand is soft; the Chinese appliances industry is slowing down.” EPS: Expandable polystyrene was assessed flat week on week at $1,495/mt FOB Northeast Asia for general purpose grade and $1,545/mt FOB Northeast Asia for flame retardant grade.
