May US domestic polystyrene contracts could be 3-4 cents/lb higher from April, sources said this week. The contract remained unsettled this week, but sources said domestic prices were going to rise at least 3 cents/lb due to the higher May US benzene contract price. Styrolution announced a 3 cents/lb increase for May, while Total Petrochemicals and Refining and Americas Styrenics announced increases of 6 cents/lb, according to separate letters the companies sent to customers in April. Feedstock benzene contracts for May settled at 284 cents/gal, up 24-26 cents/gal from April. Per industry feedback, 10 cents/gal change in benzene prices is equal to 1 cent/lb change in styrene and polystyrene production costs. Benzene spot pricing was assessed at 243 cents/gal FOB USG Wednesday, down 14 cents on the week.
