The US acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene domestic assessment was stable on the week at 111 cents/lb delivered via rail car Wednesday as June price increases continued to see resistance, sources said. Increases for 4-5 cents/lb had been announced for June due higher raw material costs, sources said. An 83-cent rise in benzene contract prices between March and May was one of the primary reasons for the increase announcements, sources said. However, benzene contracts for June settled 59 cents lower than May at 225 cents/gal, which sources said was much lower than where it was expected to settle. The lower benzene contract gave support to buyers resisting the increases, sources added. Spot styrene prices had recently declined, but rose 0.75 cent on the week, assessed at 57.75 cents/lb FOB USG Wednesday, tracking global spot pricing. Per industry feedback, market participants usually monitor benzene and styrene pricing primarily as styrene composes about 60-65% of ABS. There is a lag between when upstream price movements impact ABS, sources have said.
