The CFR Northeast Asia ethylene marker was steady week on week assessed at $1,350/mt Friday, as the primary derivative polyethylene market remained bearish while ongoing maintenance in the region kept supply limited. Asian polyethylene prices softened this week on a combination of weaker linear low-density polyethylene futures, tapering agricultural demand and falling domestic prices in China. On the bullish side, South Korea’s Yeochun Naphtha Cracking Center’s No. 1 steam cracker started a planned maintenance Thursday which will last till June 16, sources said. The cracker has an ethylene output capacity of 860,000 mt/year and propylene capacity of 450,000 mt/year. Japanese JX Nippon Oil and Energy’s naphtha-fed steam cracker in Kawasaki also remains shut.
