Asian low density polyethylene prices fell due to weak demand and high inventory from the higher imports in the past two months, according to traders. Buyers were reluctant to purchase imported cargoes in anticipation of more price reductions and the likelihood of any prompt demand being met domestically, a trader said. Demand usually takes a major hit during the monsoon season in India and South China, which typically runs from June-September, but were slightly delayed this year. Participants said demand was expected to rebound from August onwards, once current high stocks fall. In plant news, China’s Shanghai Petrochemical, a subsidiary of Sinopec, is in the process of restarting its 100,000 mt/year LDPE line in Shanghai, a source close to the company said Wednesday. It was shut May 31 for maintenance. The company’s other 100,000 mt/year LDPE plant was running normally, the source added.
