The European low density polyethylene price action lacked traction as buyers took flight from the market, sources said. The Eur50/mt increase in the ethylene contract price for March failed to trigger optimism due to dwindling downstream demand, converters said. However, producers said they had stepped up action to curb operating rates amid a gloomy environment to put upward pressure on prices. “We won’t be compensated this month for the increased cost,” one producer said, adding they had no choice but to be disciplined. “The spread of LDPE over ethylene is becoming awful; we will be reducing our output,” another producer said. The LDPE premium over ethylene was assessed at Eur197.50/mt Wednesday, the lowest since early August 2012.
