The Northwest European styrene monomer market meandered sideways on Friday, closing the week largely unchanged, although intra-week volatility was marked. Prices were assessed up $2/mt day-on-day to $1,650/mt FOB ARA, but on a week-on-week basis, styrene recorded a marginal decline of $0.50/mt. A rumoured unexpected outage that fed early-week gains was now heard to be a mere logistical issue on the back of severe weather conditions, market sources reported. “The initial issue was just the bad weather in Northern France that prevented some product coming out of Gonfreville, the rest was just speculative,” said a source. “There is no tightness at all, anywhere.”
