As further weakness emerged in the upstream styrene monomer market this week, consumers took a step back from H2 October trading on the expectation of lower prices for November. Sellers were braced for the fact that October would likely to be a split month, with the first half characterized by an urgent refilling of sharply depleted inventory positions and the second half by caution among buyers not wanting to get caught out sitting on high-priced stock in the event of ongoing weakness upstream. Earlier in the month, PS makers talked of the possibility of SM spot prices hitting a floor, which was supported by export possibilities opening up.
