Ethylene prices fell this week amid improved availability and as naphtha prices extended losses. Naphtha prices remained below $900/mt through the week, assessed at $889.75/mt CIF NWE Thursday. In combination with a strong euro, this added buoyancy to cracker margins, despite the fall in the ethylene October contract price by Eur35/mt. Contract margins were assessed at Eur389/mt Thursday, just shy of the recent high Tuesday at $396/mt. Repsol’s Spanish cracker in Tarragona began a planned maintenance for 40 days this week, a company source said Friday.
