Singapore — Japan's Showa Denko plans to restart its naphtha-fed steam cracker at Oita at the end of May, a source close to the matter said Wednesday. The steam cracker, with a capacity to produce 695,000 mt/year of ethylene and 425,000 mt/year of propylene, was shut March 10 for scheduled maintenance and was initially expected to be restarted March 21. But the company encountered problems with the cooling system during the restart, Platts reported earlier, and the cracker has remained shut since. Two downstream units at Oita were also shut in line with the steam cracker shutdown.
