Canadian imports of US crude down sharply

New York-Canadian imports of US crude plummeted in November, coming in at just 272,000 b/d as the spot arbitrage between the US Gulf Coast and East Coast Canada has become less profitable. Imports were down from more than 486,000 b/d in October, and well below the record of more nearly 570,000 b/d in May, the most recent Statistics Canada data shows. The largest reduction appears to have come from Texas-by far the largest supplier of US crude into Canada-which sent only 132,000 b/d, down from just over 338,000 b/d in October. The lion’s share of Texas barrels-around 70,000 b/d-went to Quebec, home to Valero’s 265,000 b/d Jean Gaulin refinery and Suncor’s 137,000 b/d Montreal refinery. Almost 33,000 b/d went to New Brunswick, home to Irving Oil’s 300,000 b/d Saint John facility.
