US producers will likely make a few million gallons of cellulosic ethanol this year-less than 1% of the Environmental Protection Agency's original target but enough to keep the annual refrain going that next year will be the fuel's breakthrough moment. Refiners have new options for meeting EPA's mandate when commercial-scale volumes do not exist: waiver credits priced at $1.33/gal this year and new pathways for LNGand CNG-based biogas, which have taken off much quicker.
