Calgary-Transport Canada has started a study to identify a “single, standard crude oil” to serve as a benchmark for planned new safety standards while transporting crude through either rail or in trucks, an agency official said Wednesday. “We won’t go with the lightest crude, but will consider a middle-of-the-range conventional grade,” said Tagenine Alladin, Transport Canada’s research advisor. “Crude oil sampling will not be an easy task, as we will have to consider temperature, flammability, vapor pressure and gas-oil-ratio [GOR]. We will also develop a model that will look at cracking and coking of crude oil.” GOR is a measure of inflammability and the higher its value the more “dangerous” the crude for rail or road shipments.
