Marathon Petroleum inks pact with US to cut emissions

New York-Marathon Petroleum will reduce emissions from five of its seven refineries by installing state-of-the-art flare gas recovery systems at Louisiana, Michigan, Illinois, Kentucky and Ohio plants, allowing gas now released in the atmosphere to be routed back into the plants’ fuel gas systems, a company spokesman said. Marathon signed a deal with the US Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Justice to spend $319 million to install Flare Gas Recovery Systems (FGRS) which will capture and recycle gases that would otherwise be sent to flares, said a joint statement from the two agencies released Thursday. The deal has been long in the making and is part of EPA’s Petroleum Refinery Initiative. Put in place in 2000, the program looks to lower significantly harmful emissions from the nation’s refineries, including nitrogen oxide and sulfur dioxide.
