US out-pumps Saudis to top producer spot

London—The US’ surging shale oil industry powered the country past both Saudi Arabia and Russia to become the world’s biggest oil producer last year, BP said Wednesday. The US saw an oil production increase of 1.6 million b/d in 2014, the largest growth in the world and the first time a country has raised production by at least 1 million b/d for three consecutive years, BP said in its latest annual statistical review. The US’ average oil output jumped 16% to 11.64 million b/d last year to eclipse Saudi Arabia’s 11.5 million b/d, based on figures which include natural gas liquids.
