Small US players pick up rigs cheaply: analysts

Houston—Large US basins continued to lose oil rigs last week, according to the latest Baker Hughes rig count, a move analysts said was a function of smaller players seizing them for opportunities to drill on the cheap. As oil prices continued to bounce around in the mid-to-high $40s/b, both the US oil rig count and overall rig count each fell by four. Oil rigs fell to 640, down 60% from 1,592 a year ago, while the overall rig count was down by 57% to 838, down from 1,931 a year ago.
