Alberta faces domestic rival for conventional oil flow

Calgary—Canada’s Saskatchewan province, which contains the northern portion of the prolific Bakken Shale formation, is set to emerge as a major conventional crude oil producer in Western Canada, rivaling a position currently held by neighboring Alberta. The central Canadian province will benefit from a quirk in geology that makes its reservoirs shallower and thus easier to access. Its flat terrain also makes it cheaper to move and install drilling rigs and production platforms.
