Houston—Chevron and partners on Tuesday announced what they called a “significant” oil discovery at the Anchor prospect in the deepwater US Gulf of Mexico, as crude prices dipped below the landmark $50/barrel mark. NYMEX front-month WTI closed Tuesday at $47.93, down $2.11. Analysts say a breakeven price for deepwater Gulf of Mexico fields may be as low as $50/b, depending on availability of existing infrastructure, well depth, rig and service costs and other variables.
