US crude export backers adopting new strategy

Washington-Many leading voices pushing for lifting US crude export limits have stopped touting that this would boost domestic pro- duction, at least partly due to an aversion by the Obama Administration to back policies that could increase carbon emissions. Producers have been keen to lift US crude export restrictions to capture higher interna- tional oil prices. But producers, their lobbyists and pro-export lawmakers are now highlight- ing what they say are the positive impacts US exports would have on foreign policy. US exports could boost national security and serve as a diplomatic tool to, among other benefits, loosen the hold Russian oil has over certain European markets, they argue.
