Turkey confirms Samsun-Ceyhan demise

Istanbul—Turkey’s planned 1.5 million b/d Samsun-Ceyhan oil pipeline—one of a number of ambitious projects designed to bypass the congested Bosporus Strait—has been shelved because international oil companies have been “reluctant to commit” to the project, a senior energy ministry official said Tuesday. Speaking at a conference in Istanbul, Reha Aykul Muratoglu, head of the transit department at Turkey’s energy ministry, said the pipeline, first announced in 2005, had been put to one side “for the time being.” The Samsun-Ceyhan pipeline was envisaged as a bypass for Turkey’s overcrowded Bosporus Strait and a means to help develop Ceyhan into an international oil hub.
