New York—Kirby Corp, the US’ largest inland barge operator, ordered 30 new 10,000-barrel inland barges during the second quarter for delivery in the first half of 2015 and finalized an agreement to build two 155,000-barrel coastal articulated tug barges, it said Thursday. The moves are designed to meet growing demand to move crude oil and refined products between US coastal and river ports. Kirby already had two 185,000-barrel articulated tug barges, or ATBs, on order, CEO David Grzebinski said during the company’s second quarter earnings conference call. The first of the 155,000-barrel barges will be delivered during the end of 2016 and the second in early to mid-2017.
