China, Vietnam tension amps over drilling

Hanoi—Tensions between China and Vietnam over CNOOC’s drilling operations in disputed waters of the South China Sea have risen with Hanoi calling the move illegal and Beijing maintaining that the drilling is within its waters. The US, meanwhile, stepped in on Tuesday warning China that its decision to move a deep-sea oil rig into the disputed waters was a “provocative” step which it was monitoring closely, the AFP reported.
