US awards contracts for military-grade biofuels

Washington—US government officials Friday announced three contracts for the production of more than 100 million gal/year of drop-in, military-compatible biofuels. Initial production is scheduled to begin in 2016. The contracts were awarded to companies in Nevada, Oregon and on the Gulf Coast, according to the US Department of Energy. Under the contracts, the biofuels will have a weighted average price of less than $3.50/ gal and produce at least 50% lower life-cycle greenhouse gas emissions than conventional fuel, DOE said.
