Washington—The US Federal Energy Regulatory Commission earlier this month took the unusual step of invoking its emergency powers to increase propane shipments to the frigid Midwest and Northeast. But officials say the commission’s use of its emergency authority on petroleum product transportation will likely continue to be a rare event. “There were some unique circumstances that went into this one,” FERC Commissioner Tony Clark said in an interview regarding the propane order. “I think it will tend to be a fairly rare situation where it would need to be invoked, but who knows.”
