摘要

Yangon—Speakers at the inaugural Myanmar Oil and Gas Week event were upbeat that the country’s shift towards democracy—what is described as “disciplined democracy”—has brought transparency and opportunity for foreign companies to work in the country, but realistic that a number of challenges remain in further developing what is one of the world’s oldest oil-producing areas. Southeast Asia’s second largest country by area, with a population of 60 million, was ruled by a military junta from 1962 and following aggressive crackdowns on protesters in 1988 international sanctions were applied, leaving the country isolated and largely poverty-stricken.
