Ukraine guarantees gas transit amid unrest

Moscow—Ukraine has guaranteed the stable transit of Russian gas and power to customers in the EU and the Customs Union despite violent protests which has left dozens dead and raised concerns over the former Soviet state tipping into civil war. “Any political problems within the country should not hinder Ukraine from carrying out its export obligations to the international community in the energy, as well as other, sectors,” the country’s acting deputy prime minister Yuriy Boyko said Friday, said in a statement posted on the government’s website. More than half of Russian gas shipped to Europe travels through Ukraine and, in 2013, the shipments totaled 86.13 billion cubic meters.
