Houston—Independent operator Hess has raised the number of fracture stages in its Bakken Shale operation to 35, a move that will be a standard company well completion technique there and help maximize its production from the giant crude oil play, top company managers said Wednesday. Increasing its well stage count in the North Dakota play, up from a previous 29 stages, and continuing other recent operational tweaks such as raising the amount of sand per stage to improve oil flows, are key for Hess to maintain a competitive edge in the play, company CEO Gregory Hill said during a second quarter earnings conference call.
