Breitburn will acquire QR Energy for $3 billion

Houston—In what appears to be a continuing trend toward mergers motivated by increases in scale, operating efficiencies and development opportunities in key US plays, Breitburn Energy Partners LP agreed Thursday to acquire QR Energy LP in a unit-for-unit exchange valued at $3 billion. And at least one analyst foresees a possible trend among small master limited partnerships, or MLPs, as a lever to achieve the lower costs and raise production from prospective fields that Breitburn and QR predict will result from their combination.
