US rail body urges safer oil, ethanol cars

Washington-The US group representing freight rail operators on Thursday urged fed- eral regulators to boost safety requirements for new rail cars carrying crude oil and ethanol and require the retrofitting of the existing fleet. The position advocated by the Association of American Railroads goes much further than the petition the group filed in March 2011 on behalf of a wider coalition of rail interests, including rail car owners, manufacturers and shippers of hazardous materials.
