Canada’s oil sands beckon unit trains

Fort McMurray, Alberta—Canadian National Railway will support the development of unit trains in Alberta to transport diluted bitumen to the US, in response to growing industry demand in the province, the company’s sales director said Wednesday. A unit train is one in which all the cars making it up carry the same commodity, and are shipped from the same origin to the same destination, without being split up or stored en route.
