Some US frackers shift to 'brackish' water

Houston-Gas and oil drillers in arid regions that compete with farmers, ranchers, locali- ties and others for fresh water may be turning to new technologies for hydraulic fracturing and related operations, according to industry officials and analysts. In the Permian Basin of West Texas, Apache Corporation is using non-potable "brackish" water, combined with recycled produced water from previously drilled wells, to eliminate the need for fresh water to frack wells.
