New York—The United Steelworkers, PBF Energy and Philadelphia Energy Solutions have asked the White House to reform the Renewable Fuel Standard, which the refiners say has grown too costly as buying interest in ethanol renewable credits has spiked while gasoline demand has been flat. In a letter mailed July 25 to Gene Sperling, director of the White House’s National Economic Council, the leaders urge the Obama administration and the Environmental Protection Agency to act quickly to resolve market uncertainty surrounding the RFS, which requires an increasing amount of ethanol to be blended annually into US gasoline supplies.
