Houston—Big contract driller Transocean said that Chevron has awarded it a five year contract as first user on an ultra-deepwater offshore drillship that Transocean will build in South Korea and deliver by mid-2016, at a dayrate of $602,400. The price tag for the dynamically positioned rig is an estimated $725 million, Transocean said in a statement Tuesday. The rig, which will have two 15,000 psi blowout preventers (BOP), will be able to operate in water depths of 12,000 feet and drill down to total depths of 40,000 feet.
