US ethanol market not in danger of manipulation: FTC

Washington-The number of ethanol pro- ducers in the US grew by two this year to 156 firms, a report by the US Federal Trade Commission found, concluding that collu- sion or manipulation of pricing or output levels is unlikely. "Staff also concludes that ease of entry and availability of ethanol imports into the United States provide additional constraints on the ability of any group of domestic firms to exercise market power," the FTC said Tuesday in unveiling its report, which is required annu- ally by the Energy Policy Act of 2005 to ensure the ethanol market is transparent and fair.
