US EPA proposes gasoline sulfur reductions by 2017

Washington-The Environmental Protection Agency has released its long-delayed Tier 3 rule tightening tailpipe emissions as well as reduc- ing sulfur content in gasoline, a move that will likely be front and center at Gina McCarthy's April 11 confirmation hearing to head the EPA. The EPA is proposing to reduce the sulfur content in gasoline to an average of 10 ppm, down from an average of 30 ppm, by 2017, which will bring federal regulations in line with California's stricter pollution rules, the most stringent in the nation.
