US presses China to cut Iranian crude buys

Washington—The US is continuing to pressure China to reduce its crude purchases from Iran and expects that country, plus the five others that still buy Iranian crude, to make further reductions, a US State Department official said May 15. The US is examining the crude purchase data from China for April and will soon decide whether to extend the exemption from US sanctions China enjoys, Wendy Sherman, undersecretary of state for political affairs, testified before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
