Lagos—Nigerian blue-collar oil workers’ union Nupeng has issued a 14-day ultimatum for the Nigerian government to urge foreign oil companies, including Shell, Italy’s Eni and Chevron, to halt plans to cut jobs, failing which it will call out its members on a general strike. Nupeng, in a statement issued after an emergency meeting to address what it termed “anti-labor practices” by the companies, said the firms planned to sack nearly 200 of their members.
