US producers focus on unconventional output growth

Houston—In separate presentations on Wednesday, two large North American producers mapped out bold plans to increase their production in key unconventional liquids plays, giving further weight to the transformative value of those resources. US-based Marathon Oil should see a greater- than-30% ramp in production in 2014 from its resource plays over this year’s volumes, and 4% overall total output growth, excluding Alaska, Angola and Libya. The company said it will also put its UK and Norway assets up for sale. And Canada’s Encana is focusing on five North American resource plays that should push liquids production up by 30% next year along with a 10% increase in netbacks, despite more than 10% lower spending in 2014, the company’s CEO said.
