Washington-The Senate on April 10 approved Sally Jewell as the new head of the Interior Department. Jewell, the CEO of Seattle-based hiking and camping outfitter Recreational Equipment Incorporated, was approved by an 87-11 vote. Jewell's nomination was approved last month by the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee in a 19-3 vote after departing Interior Secretary Ken Salazar agreed to take a "second look" at the con- struction of a road in remote Alaska. Senator Lisa Murkowski, an Alaska Republican and the committee's ranking member, had threatened to block the nomination over the road issue.
