Petrobras threatened with refinery pollution charges

Sao Paulo—Brazil’s Petrobras is set to face criminal charges this month for pollution and environmental damage in a move that could also increase scrutiny over whether the country adequately regulates its oil industry. Federal prosecutor Renato Machado told Platts on September 7 he expects to file a criminal lawsuit against Petrobras in a Rio de Janeiro court “in the next few weeks.” He has also started a civil investigation.
