South Korea cracks down on fake oil products sales

Seoul—South Korean police on September 11 arrested 21 people for making and selling 320 million liters (around 2 million barrels) of fake oil products over the past three years. The group set up a paper company in October 2009 to buy solvent extracted from crude to make 220 million liters of counterfeit gasoline and 100 million liters of counterfeit diesel, according to Seoul police and staterun oil distribution watchdog Korea Institute of Petroleum Management. The fake petroleum was a mixture of a solvent, possibly toluene, with methyl alcohol.
