Paris—Azerbaijan hopes work on building a new deepwater drilling rig can begin this year, with a second to follow in 2013, to enable timely exploration and appraisal of oil and gas in the deepwater of its sector of the Caspian Sea, a senior official at state-owned Socar said May 15. Vaqif Aliyev, head of Socar’s investment division, told a conference in Paris the first rig could be completed by 2015.
