US CFTC may relax its position limit rule

Washington—The US Commodity Futures Trading Commission proposed May 18 relaxing a controversial position limits rule it approved in October. Under the revised proposal, the CFTC will require certain firms to count the positions of an affiliate against the overall limits if it owns more than 50% of the affiliate. Under the final position limits rule that commissioners approved in a partisan 3-2 vote in October, positions held by affiliates in which a company holds a 10% stake would have counted toward the larger company’s overall position.
