Washington-Under the right circumstances, injection wells can create conditions that lead to earthquakes, a New York research scientist and an Arkansas geologist said in separate interviews January 4. "The earthquakes in Ohio appear linked to the injection wells" near Youngstown, said Won- Young Kim, a professor at Columbia University. "There have been more than a dozen earth- quakes in that area since March 17, 2011." Kim has been retained by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources to investi- gate the temblors, the biggest of which regis- tered a magnitude 4.0 on December 31. That earthquake prompted the DNR to shut five injection wells near Youngstown pending the probe (ON 1/4).
