China sends top diplomat to Iran as tensions mount

Singapore-China's Deputy Foreign Minister Zhai Jun visited held talks with senior officials during his recent visit to Iran amid heightened tensions following Tehran's threat to close the strategic Strait of Hormuz to oil tankers. In a statement published on its website, China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that Zhai visited Tehran over December 28-29 and met Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi and Deputy Secretary of the Supreme Nation- al Security Council Ali Bagheri as well as oth- ers and "exchanged views over international and regional issues."
