Washington—With little fanfare, two major US automakers have approved the use of gasoline blended with up to 15% ethanol for millions of new cars hitting the market. Ford approved the fuel for all 2013 models, and General Motors cleared it for 2012 and 2013 models. White lettering printed on the new vehicles’ fuel ports—“Gasoline / E0-E15”—might accelerate the so-far sluggish consumer adoption of the higher-ethanol blend and help give refiners a way to break through the 10% blendwall.
