Gazprom maintains gas supplies to Europe

Moscow-Russian gas giant Gazprom said February 1 it is fulfilling its contractual obliga- tions to supply gas to Europe amid record low temperatures in eastern Europe and a sharp increase in gas consumption in Russia itself. Ukraine has begun importing more gas from Russia as temperatures fell to minus 30 degrees Celsius, while Poland has diverted gas for industrial use to the residential sector. Gazprom conceded it was forced to cut supplies to Europe "insignificantly" January 31 because of sharp spike in demand in Rus- sia, but insisted all contractual volumes were being supplied as of February 1.
